Prized by the elite, ‘indiennes’, coloured cotton fabrics imported from India, were nevertheless banned by the king for a long time.

It was from the 18th century onwards that French manufacturers entered the print market, which ranged from plant motifs to scenes of pastoral life.

The most famous of these was Jouy-en-Josas, founded by Protestant Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf in 1760.
