Henry was born at the Château of Pau in 1553. His cradle was fashioned from tortoiseshell.

Placed by his father at the French court in 1561, he rejoined his mother in Béarn in 1567. In 1568, he accompanied her to La Rochelle and joined the Protestant cause during the Third War of Religion. This conflict was marked, in 1569, by the defeats at Jarnac, where Condé, commander of the Protestant army, was killed, and at Moncontour.
