According to Roman Catholic doctrine, indulgences were a means of shortening the sojourn of the dead in Purgatory – by the means of pilgrimages, prayers or gifts to the Church. This practice led to abuse, especially of financial nature. Luther’s denunciation of such practices launched the Reformation.
