From 12 May to 4 July 2025, Médiathèque protestante du Stift (Strasbourg)
A city of printers and of the Reformation, Strasbourg became a centre of Christian Hebraism in the 16th century. Some of the greatest Hebrew scholars of the period worked in the city, and Hebrew courses were offered at the Gymnase and the Protestant Academy. Numerous Hebrew works were published by the city’s printers: grammars, dictionaries and teaching manuals, commentaries on the books of the Old Testament and
missionary writings aimed at the Jews. Nine Hebraists associated with Strasbourg – whether they lived there or simply stayed – emerged during this period: Martin Bucer, Wolfgang Capiton, Paul Fagius, Wolfgang Musculus, Jean Pappus, Conrad Pellican, Anton Reuchlin, Elias Schad and Emmanuel Tremellius. Each will be the subject of a section of the exhibition, highlighting their respective contributions to the Hebraic sciences.
Scientific curator: Eran Shuali, Professor of Biblical Philology at the University of Strasbourg’s Faculty of Protestant Theology.
