Virtual exhibition – Coexistence: Catholics x Protestants in the Deux-Sèvres (1517-1905)

The coexistence of two denominations claiming a common origin seems to have had a profound effect on the political, social, economic and cultural history of the Deux-Sèvres.

The Archives départementales des Deux-Sèvres invite you to explore the links between Catholics and Protestants between the birth of Protestantism (1517) and the Law of Separation of Church and State (1905).

This exhibition explores the sometimes turbulent lives of Catholics and Protestants in the Deux-Sèvres region from the 16th century to the early 20th century. Take part in a never-before-seen historical experience based on our Deux-Sèvres archives, and discover how, in everyday life, from birth to death, in times of celebration, in churches or temples, in periods of confrontation or peace, it was possible to live together, in coexistence.
