With its rose-coloured blood. Was the Peasants’ War in Alsace a religious war?

This exhibition looks at the religious dimension of the Peasants’ War, which took place in 1524-1525. Originating in Baden in the summer of 1524 and affecting Alsace in April 1525, this unfinished revolution reached its climax in May 1525, in a particularly violent manner west of the Rhine. Although largely forgotten, this episode stands out as a key moment in the history of Alsace.

The exhibition at the Médiathèque shows that the peasants were part of the spiritual explosion at the beginning of the century. It analyses how the Christian faith played a central role in the conflict, highlighting the role of Protestant theologians. The decisive role of printing is also highlighted. Original engravings, manuscripts and printed books will be on display. Documents from the Médiathèque’s old collection will be presented to the public for the first time, including a very rare copy of the Douze articles des Paysans printed in Strasbourg.
