Eradicated temples built before the Revolution

Most of these temples were eradicated at the instigation of King Louis XIV in the 17th century.

After 1661, when Louis XIV’s personal reign began, the Edict of Nantes was implemented by parliaments using legal harassment and looking for the slightest irregularities to justify closing temples down.

Finally, the Edict of Fontainebleau in 1685 prescribed in article 1 that “all temples of the so-called R.P.R. (Pretended Reformed Religion) located in our Kingdom be shortly demolished”, which was promptly carried out.
