For Christians, Jesus is the Saviour who gives his life that man might be reconciled with God. Salvation is realised and inaugurated by the death and resurrection of Jesus. According to Roman Catholic theology, mankind, by its good works, cooperates towards its own salvation. For Luther, salvation is a sheer gift of God, “salvation by grace”.
